Schooled in European traditions and filled with national pride, a loose collection of painters living in Toronto formed the Group of Seven in 1920 to produce distinctly Canadian imagery. The impetus for this association was Lawren S. Harris (1885–1970), who firmly believed in the need for a national art movement.

Harris painted the Canadian landscape with enthusiasm, capturing the majesty of its wilderness and its inherent spirituality. The mystical quality of his works sets them apart from those of the other Group of Seven members. “Art,” he wrote in 1924, “is the beginning of vision into the realm of eternal life.”
